Urban public spaces as catalysts for empowerment and social inclusion

This research explores the critical role of urban public spaces in facilitating social interaction, empowerment and social inclusion of Kurdish women in different geographical contexts, including the Middle Eastern cities of Sanandaj and Sulaimani and the European cities of Vienna and Cologne. The findings show that despite traditionally greater freedoms in the Kurdistan Region, women’s engagement in public spaces remains limited. However, a strong positive correlation was found between their interactions in these spaces and their empowerment. The shift from traditional leisure spaces to commodified venues such as shopping malls indicates significant socio-political and socio-spatial transformations affecting the use of public space. In the European contexts of Vienna and Cologne, the research deepens the understanding of how urban public spaces serve as crucial platforms for social encounters, creativity and the building of social capital among Kurdish immigrant women. The study supports existing theories by providing empirical evidence that accessible and inclusive public spaces promote social integration and foster a sense of safety and community among these women. Particularly in Vienna, the perception of safety in open spaces contributes significantly to their preference for these spaces, and increases passive and active interactions. Despite some barriers to contact, regular engagement in public spaces is positively associated with social integration. These findings are critical for urban planners and policy makers, and underscore the need for city-specific public space designs that take into account the unique socio-spatial dynamics faced by migrant women.

This nuanced understanding helps to rethink urban planning to promote inclusivity, security and active participation in public life. The findings argue for a transformative approach to urban policy that emphasizes the integration of spatial dimensions with social and cultural considerations to better serve the diverse needs of urban populations, particularly migrant communities. Future research directions are suggested to explore the longitudinal impact of inclusive public spaces on migrant women’s integration trajectories, and to explore the potential of digital spaces to complement physical interactions. This comprehensive perspective is essential for the development of more equitable and vibrant urban environments, ensuring that public spaces are not only accessible but also welcoming and safe for all, especially marginalized groups such as migrant women.
