Hooshmand Alizadeh
Associated Researcher
I am a qualified planner with a Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning and a PhD in Social Sciences (Urban Design). Throughout my academic career since 2006, I have been dedicated to researching the relationship between urban planning and environmental sustainability, with a particular focus on the empowerment of marginalized communities in urban settings. My current research focuses on “Women-driven community development: promoting community inclusion and resilience in Vienna’s multicultural dynamic environment” and another research project (accepted by UCL) entitled “Cultural heritage revival for supporting green community initiatives: a case study of Hawraman in Iraqi Kurdistan”.

About Me
My academic career began with a PhD in Social Sciences (Urban Design) at Newcastle University, UK, and continued through positions as Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Kurdistan, Iran, to a position as Senior Researcher at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Throughout my career, my research draws on a diverse methodological palette and theoretical frameworks that explore the relationship between urban planning and environmental sustainability, with a particular focus on the empowerment of marginalized communities in the urban environment. This interdisciplinary approach has led me to examine the socio-material complexity of public spaces and their profound impact on societal dynamics. From my point of view, public spaces connect the space of home and work/study thus providing the setting and the opportunity for the enrichment of a society’s public life and are therefore key to understanding everyday social relations and ultimately key element of sustainable urban development.
The most important internationally received scholarly achievement is the development of the concept of the Kurdish city in general and Kurdish women’s spatiality in particular, together with its socio-spatial implications for their everyday social lives. Considering the initiation of this concept, some Master’s and Ph.D. theses have been completed in accordance with Kurdish Urbanism at Iranian and KRG (Kurdistan Regional Government) universities. Following the scholarly progress of this concept, our books titled “The City Profile: Kurdish Cities” was granted the Book Excellence award at the University of Kurdistan, Iran in 2020. My new book titled “Building a traditional Kurdish City” was also awarded GAA 2022 – Special Mention in the ISOCARP Award Ceremony. Apart from this, I advanced the concept of women’s spatiality based on the extent of their interactions with and empowerment from public spaces in my EU research project, based on a comparative study in different urban contexts of the Middle East and Europe. The results of this project are still in progress for further conceptualisation of the interrelationship between women’s interactions in public spaces and the extent of their empowerment in social life. As lead author, I am also currently working on the Vision of Major Kurdish Cities in Two Regions of Kurdistan (Iran and Iraq) for the KRG.
My research was supported by grants from various governmental and public organizations, including Iran and the EU, as well as the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), the Nahrein network (University College London) and VNG International in the Netherlands.
