Christoph Schimmel

PhD Candidate, Researcher

The main question that guides my research is what kind of sociospatial strategies and practices shape the way of how social (and digital) inequalities are being produced and reproduced. With reference to my PhD project, I mainly consider sociospatial relations within the academic system of knowledge production and the academic publishing industry.

About Me

My main interest as a geographer is how (social and digital) inequalities are being produced and reproduced. To begin with an analysis of the system of academic knowledge production seems to be a good starting point to investigate global power relations and its consequences for global society. I am focussing on qualitatively-driven mixed methods in order to combine the best of the two worlds and try to create a whole picture of my object of research.

Before I started to do my PhD, I was coordinator of the DFG project “Open Encyclopedia System” at the Freie Universität Berlin from 2016 to 2019. During my masters I did field research in Varanasi, India (funded by PROMOS – DAAD) and Phnom Penh, Cambodia (funded by the Humboldt-Ritter-Penck-Stiftung). I studied at the Universities of Erlangen-Nürnberg and Berlin (Freie Universität) and received my Master’s degree from the Freie Universität Berlin.
