Mag. Dr.

Alexander Trupp

Associate Professor, editor

My research is guided by questions of how tourism, migration, and sustainable development intersect with broader processes of socio-economic transformation, (im)mobilities, and society-environment relations. I explore these issues through qualitative and creative methods, with a particular focus on microbusinesses, digitization, and the intersection of tourism and migration. Having lived in the Asia-Pacific region for nine years, including Malaysia, Thailand, and the Pacific Islands, I bring a cross-cultural perspective to my work.

I also serve as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Southeast Asian Studies (ASEAS), a Scopus-indexed, open-access journal that promotes scholarly engagement with the region. My research has received funding from various organizations, including the European Commission, The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education, the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, and The Toshiba Foundation. Furthermore, I have consulted for international organizations such as the OECD.

I have disseminated my work through over 60 scientific publications, public engagement via popular and social media, and numerous invited talks, including at the National University of Singapore and the University of Oxford. I am passionate about fostering interdisciplinary dialogues and applying geographic perspectives to address global challenges.
